PGL is widely recognised as the UK's original and biggest operator of summer camps. In this context our name became known as Parents Get Lost, but we now also operate a programme of family holidays so that parents can come too!
With the help of our staff, we make sure that every year we continue to build upon our success and offer safe, exciting, challenging and fun activities!
A Typical Day in the Job
Discover your new working adventure in the outdoors with PGL. Don't miss your chance to be part of it!
There is no such thing as a typical day as an Outdoor Activity Instructor at PGL. You will be responsible for delivering activity sessions throughout the day as well as working with groups to engage with them in their free time with games, taking them through meal times, liaising with teachers and generally organising the group throughout their stay.
As an Outdoor Activity Instructor you'll introduce guests to a number of activities and deliver group taster sessions in our core activities, including orienteering, abseiling, climbing, fencing, motorsports, ropes challenge courses, initiative exercises and archery as well as helping to organise and participate in evening entertainments.
One of the best aspects of this job is seeing young people achieve things they thought they never could, and knowing that you had a big part to play in their success. It can be hard work but it’s also great fun.
Once your day at work has finished you will get to experience centre life with all centres having their own staff areas and social scene. You will have the freedom to do as much or as little as you want with your free time. It really is what you make of it!
Who are we looking for?
We look for energetic people who are willing to learn, with a commitment to customer service excellence to help to give our guests an experience of a lifetime. Any experience of volunteering or working with young people is a distinct advantage however no formal activity qualifications are required. However, you do need to be enthusiastic, willing to learn and have lots of energy!
If you bring this we will train you and give you the confidence and skills to be successful and excel in this role. This is a fantastic opportunity to share your love for sports, fun and the outdoors with our young guests.
Successful applicants are required to undergo an enhanced DBS disclosure, which PGL will pay for. You need to possess the legal right to live and work in the UK to be considered for employment with PGL. PGL is committed to the principles of equality and diversity and welcome applicants from all sectors of the community.
What we can offer you
Each of PGL's 16 outdoor activity centres across the UK has plenty to offer whether you are an old hat when it comes to outdoor adventures or if it's your first time in the great outdoors then there will be someone to show you the 'ropes'.
The Outdoor Activity Instructor role is particularly great for anyone looking to start their career in the outdoor industry, searching for a career break or a rewarding gap year project. You'll pick up numerous transferable skills for your CV including group communication, confidence, resourcefulness and how to handle situations as they arise.
All Instructors undergo a comprehensive training programme when they first join PGL. We will then provide transport to get you to your centre of work. Your aptitude and personal performance during this course, together with skills and experience given on your application, will determine whether your role will be made up mainly of instructing activities, or more pastoral duties, which may include a mix of instructing and organising evening entertainments.
As a first year Activity Instructor/Group Leader, you will be on our Apprenticeship Programme.
We offer a competitive wage, paid monthly, meals and on-site accommodation provided, access to training and development opportunities and a FREE staff uniform that reflects your job role, location and contract length.
This is a residential job role with staff accommodation provided on centre.
